TMJ Treatment – Jaw Pain Relief

It’s not uncommon for people to feel chronic facial pain. It could be a tender jaw, pain near the ear, headaches & neck aches, or clicking or popping noises whenever you open your mouth. These issues could stem from tooth decay, gum disease, or a sinus infection – all of which are rather easily identified and treated. But sometimes the cause is harder to identify, and could be TMJ. When suffering TMJ, your jaw and chewing muscles are affected by several painful disorders, which cause the jaw and nearby muscles to ache, whether consistently or erratically.

Depending on the severity of your orofacial pain, there are various treatment methods. A few reversible or temporary TMJ treatments include arthrocentesis (lavage), muscle relaxants, a soft food diet, stress-reducing exercises, heat/ice packs, mouth protectors to prevent teeth grinding and avoidance of extreme jaw movements. More extreme cases of TMJ may require extensive treatments such as pain-relief injections or correctional surgery (though surgery isn’t always recommended because it may aggravate the problem in some cases).
