It’s not uncommon for people to feel facial pain. It could be a tender jaw, pain near the ear, headaches & neck aches, or clicking or popping noises whenever you open your mouth. These issues could stem from tooth decay, gum disease, or sinus infection- all of which are rather easily identified and treated. Sometimes the cause is harder to identify and it could be a problem the jaw joint (Temporomandibular Joint or TMJ) . A group of conditions characterized by pain and dysfunction of the TMJ and/or nearby muscles is called Temporomandibular Disorder or TMD.

Depending on the severity of your orofacial pain, there are various treatment methods. A few reversible or temporary TMD treatments include arthrocentesis (lavage), muscle relaxants, a soft food diet, stress-reducing exercises, heat/ice packs, mouth protectors to prevent teeth grinding and avoidance of extreme jaw movements. More extreme cases of TMD may require extensive treatments such as pain-relief injections or correctional surgery (though surgery isn’t always recommended because it may aggravate the problem in some cases).
